Canon 5D Mark III firmware update enables improved AF, uncompressed HDMI output

Canon 5D Mark III firmware update enables improved autofocus, uncompressed HDMI output

If your camera arsenal includes a 5D Mark III, prepare to get your download on. Earlier today, Canon released a major firmware update for the hit DSLR -- version 1.2.1 enables clean, uncompressed HDMI output with simultaneous LCD display and recording to CF or SD cards, along with cross-type autofocus for apertures as small as f/8, bringing that aspect of AF capability in line with the EOS-1D X. You'll be able to take advantage of improved autofocus performance even when using an f/5.6 lens with a 1.4x extender, or an f/4 lens with a 2x extender. On the video front, version 1.2.1 will let you boot an uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2 feed to an external recorder, enabling your pick of codecs and frame rates, while also eliminating arbitrary limits on record time. The free download, available for recent versions of Mac OS and Windows, is yours for the taking at the source link below.

Wide-eyed fear expressions may help us -- and others -- to locate threats

May 1, 2013 ? Wide-eyed expressions that typically signal fear seem to enlarge our visual field making it easier to spot threats at the same time they enhance the ability of others to locate the source of danger, according to new research from the University of Toronto.

The research by Daniel Lee, a graduate student in the Department of Psychology is published on the Association for Psychological Science's Psychological Science journal website.

"Emotional expressions look the way they do for a reason," says Lee. "They are socially useful for communicating emotional states, but they are also useful as raw physical signals. In the case of widened eyes, they help send a clearer gaze signal that tells observers to 'look there.'"

Lee, his supervisor Adam Anderson also of U of T's psychology department and Joshua Susskind of University of California, San Diego first found that participants who made wide-eyed fear expressions could literally see more: they were able to discriminate visual patterns farther out in their peripheral vision than participants who made neutral expressions or expressions of disgust.

Next, they investigated the benefits that wide-eyed expressions might confer to onlookers. They found that participants were better able to tell which direction a pair of eyes was looking as the eyes became wider. And these wider eyes helped participants respond to targets that were located in the direction of the gaze. Importantly, these benefits did not depend on recognizing the eyes as fearful.

Wide-eyed expressions are helpful for onlookers quite simply because as eyes become wider, we can see more of the iris and whites of the eyes, known as sclera. This directly increases the physical contrast and information signal, making it easier to tell where someone is looking.

"Our eyes are important social signals," says Lee. "This research really shows how social we are wired to be."

Lerer Ventures' Ken Lerer: ?We Are Going To Launch StopTheNRA.com?

TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013 - Day 3Today at Disrupt NY, Ken Lerer and Ben Lerer took the stage to talk about Lerer Ventures and their respective entrepreneur stories. One thing that caught the attention of the audience is when Ken Lerer talked about gun control and a new StopTheNRA.com website. “We are going to launch StopTheNRA.com,” Ken Lerer said. The site should be up in about two weeks. They already own the domain name and it’s now just a matter of time. It will be a partnership with Mayor Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Gabrielle Giffords’ Americans for Responsible Solutions initiatives. The motivation behind this new site is to be more vocal about gun control. “We are doing something viral,” Ken Lerer said. A significant gun control bill that would have expanded background checks for gun buyers was brought to a vote in the senate a few weeks ago, but the effort?failed, and the government is now back to square one. When asked about New York politics, Ken Lerer only had good things to say about Mayor Bloomberg. “Spectacular” was the word he used to describe him. “His or her successor may not be as knowledgeable as him,” he continued. That’s why he chose not to express a preference for the front-runners of the upcoming election.

The politics of climate change

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

U.S. residents who believe in the scientific consensus on global warming are more likely to support government action to curb emissions, regardless of whether they are Republican or Democrat, according to a study led by a Michigan State University sociologist.

However, a political divide remains on the existence of climate change despite the fact that the vast majority of scientists believe it is real, said Aaron M. McCright, associate professor in Lyman Briggs College and the Department of Sociology.

The study, in the journal Climatic Change, is one of the first to examine the influence of political orientation on perceived scientific agreement and support for government action to reduce emissions.

"The more people believe scientists agree about climate change, the more willing they are to support government action, even when their party affiliation is taken into account," McCright said. "But there is still a political split on levels of perceived scientific agreement, in that fewer Republicans and conservatives than Democrats and liberals believe there is a scientific consensus."

McCright and colleagues analyzed a Gallup survey of 1,024 adults who were asked about their views on climate change.

The results reaffirm the success of what McCright calls the "denial machine" ? an organized movement to undercut the scientific reality of climate change during the past two decades.

McCright said the first step in dealing with climate change is getting both sides of the political spectrum to accept the scientific consensus. At that point, he said, policymakers can go about the task of coming up with an approach to combat it.

He said both the government and industry should be involved in that effort.

"Certainly we can't solve all our problems with global warming through government regulations ? in fact, for some problems, government regulations might make it worse," McCright said. "And so we need a combination of market-based solutions and government regulations."

It's good to be a stolen woman on 'The Voice'

TV

The best thing to be on ?The Voice? on Monday night? A woman stolen by one of the coaches as Adam Levine and Shakira's teams performed in the knockout rounds. Blake Shelton and Usher's singers will do the same on Tuesday, but were limited to offering witty quips to start the week.

Among Shakira?s winners were Karina Iglesias and Sasha Allen, both of whom she stole from Adam in the battle rounds. She also kept Kris Thomas, who the coaches thought was a woman in the blind auditions until they turned their chairs around, a fact that we are reminded of every time he takes the stage and NBC re-airs that footage. Garrett Gardner was also a keeper.

So basically, if you're a woman and you voluntarily picked Shakira simply because she turned her chair around for you at the blind auditions, you?re gone. If you let her steal you from someone else, she liked you more.

On the other hand, Adam was all women, all the time. He kept the stolen Caroline Glaser, as well as Judith Hill, Sarah Simmons and Amber Carrington. That meant saying goodbye to Midas Whale, ending Jon Peter Lewis? dream of making the live shows for both ?The Voice? and ?American Idol.?

It?s bad news for anyone intending to watch the live shows, since Midas Whale would have been the most entertaining act. On the other hand, as Taylor Hicks proved on season five of ?America Idol,? letting the entertainers advance to the live shows means they sometimes win at the expense of more talented alternatives, so in that sense, it?s tough to fault Adam?s choice.

The Maroon 5 frontman also dropped Orlando Dixon and Warren Stone, so the women on his team went 3-0 in head-to-head battles with the opposite sex.

Blake Shelton would consider himself another loser of the night. The country star first had to watch Amber continue to grow into a surprising contender for Adam. ?I think I like Amber as much as I can?t stand Adam, and that?s a lot,? he said. (Dude, you?re not footling anyone. Embrace the bromance.)

He also saw Judith hit one out of the park with Willie Nelson?s ?Always on My Mind.? (Note to readers: It was Blake who called it a Willie Nelson song, so all of you Elvis Presley/John Wesley Ryles/Pet Shop Boys fans go yell at him instead of us.) ?Why don?t you come down here and punch me in the face,? Blake asked her, insulted that she wasn?t on his squad if she was going to go in that direction and do it so well.

Shakira immediately volunteered to be her proxy, but fists were not thrown. Maybe they?re saving the brawls for the live shows.

Did the right singers win? Tell us what you thought of the performances on our Facebook page!
