William Shatner's 'World' hits Broadway

By Randee Dawn

In his decades on the small and big screen, William Shatner has boldly gone where few men have gone before. But it's taken him 50 years to return to Broadway, as he's now doing with his one-man show, "Shatner's World: We Just Live in It."

The former Capt. Kirk of "Star Trek" proves that at 80, there's almost nothing he can't do -- including going onstage on opening night while battling the flu, as he told TODAY's Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb in the studio Wednesday. "And what do you do?" he said. "So what you do -- and this is part of what I talk about in the show, and you say, 'This is great: I'm opening in a show that I'm obsessed with for a year, and I've got the flu. That's great!'"

So what should audiences expect? A whole vat of Shat, that's what: He discusses "Star Trek," of course, but also: "I talk about love, I talk about music, I talk about death, I talk about horses, I talk about the love of horses ... I talk about the joy of horses, I talk about music," he said.

He also revealed that pal Brad Paisley (Shatner has appeared in two of the country singer's music videos) will be putting in an appearance?to help Shatner sing?"Real," a song?Paisley wrote about the actor.

But there's one thing Shatner isn't sharing in the show, because Kathie Lee told him about it for the first time on Wednesday: He was "one of my first major, major crushes" at age 4, the TODAY host said.

"Age has become a barrier," he noted slyly.

"Shatner's World" runs at the Music Box Theater on Broadway until March 4; the actor will go on tour after that.
