Iron Man Recast? Robert Downey, Jr 'Would Really Hate' That

The actor tells MTV News he expects to play the superhero 'for a long while.'

With the Avengers finally assembling next week, Marvel Studios and the stars behind the heroes have already begun to look ahead to the next films set in the comic-book universe. At the closing night celebration of the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday night (April 28), Robert Downey, Jr. spoke with MTV News about the future of his character, Iron Man, and addressed recent talk about other actors playing the role in the future.

At CinemaCon last week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige mentioned to Badass Digest that when it came time for Downey to leave the role of Tony Stark behind, a new actor could pick up right where he left off, like in the James Bond films.

But Downey told MTV News on the red carpet that he wasn't so thrilled about the idea of someone else playing Tony Stark. "I would really hate for someone else to think they could step into my shoes," he said. An infamous jokester, he couldn't help but ask, "I wonder who's playing Tony Stark next. Is it you? Is that what you're here to tell me?"

But Downey can't be Iron Man forever, and while the 42-year-old actor couldn't say for sure how many movies he has left in him, he made clear he'll be interested as long as they remain good films.

"I know things are looking like that they could go on for a long while," Downey said. "As usual in my book, it's all about quality control and delivering a product that you can have this kind of reaction to. If they keep doing that, maybe I'll keep showing up."

In Downey's immediate Marvel future, there's next year's "Iron Man 3." The past few weeks have seen actors like Sir Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and Jessica Chastain potentially joining the cast, and Downey said that he could not wait to work with "any or all of them."

"It's funny. Sometimes you have to call for a good old-fashioned British invasion," Downey said. "'Iron Man 3' is really shaping up to be something special. We start in a couple weeks. I'm sure I'll be leaking secrets to you as we move ahead."

What secrets, you ask? Well, it was recently announced that "Iron Man 3" would be co-produced in China. As for whether any filming would take place in the East, Downey was less forthcoming. "I'd like to tell you all my secrets," he said," but I forget them."

Check out everything we've got on "The Avengers."

Is this RIM's BlackBerry 10 development device?

Image

You know the drill -- grab yourself a spoonful of Morton's and get ready for another supposed leak of a gadget. This time around, you're looking at what's claimed as being of Research In Motion's BlackBerry 10 "Development Alpha" devices that will be handed out during next week's BlackBerry Jam -- just like the company promised a month ago. Images of the device first surfaced over at Crackberry's forums and, as the site points out, the touchscreen candy bar seems to share its design DNA with the PlayBook. Keeping in mind that it's likely to remain a testing device for devs, don't bank on it ever hitting store shelves. That said, we're now curious how pivotal a roll RIM's famous tactile keyboards will play on its next-generation phones -- if any. Head over to the sources links below if you'd like to catch more photos from Mr. Blurrycam and extra information in the meantime.

Panasonic details radar-based technology that can detect collisions in low light

Image

Collision detection for cars? Yeah, scientists are on that. But whenever we read about concepts like this, the accompanying literature is often curiously light on details pertaining to real-life driving conditions; it's often unclear how well the tech will fare if you dredge it up on a foggy day, or in the middle of torrential storm. But in that press release you seen down there, low visibility and poorly lit roads are all Panasonic wants to talk about. The company just unveiled its new crash-avoidance system, which, like other concepts we've seen, uses millimeter-wave radar technology to detect pedestrians and bicyclists. Since humans tend to reflect weaker radar signals than cars, Panasonic has designed a new pulse radar code sequence that allows pedestrians to leave a bigger footprint. It's so effective, the company claims, that it can detect bystanders up to 40 meters (131 feet) away, and will work at night and through rain, fog, snow and blinding sunlight. That all sounds promising, of course, but as with other concepts, it's not clear, when, exactly we'll see this system put to good use in the real world.

Samsung May Have Just Become The King Of Mobile Handsets, While S&P Downgrades Nokia To Junk

Image (1) samsung_logo_crown-300x268.jpg for post 47500Samsung has been, for years, slowly approaching Nokia as the world's biggest handset maker, and today looks like the day the crown has been passed: As of last quarter, Strategy Analytics noted that Samsung shipped the most mobile devices of any single manufacturer world-wide, also taking pole position in smartphones. At the same time, Nokia not only slipped in those rankings but it also got another slap in the face, as Standard & Poor's, the credit-rating agency, downgraded Nokia to "junk" status. The news comes on the same day that Samsung presented its Q1 earnings, in which the Korean company reported revenues of 45 trillion won ($40 billion) for the three months that ended March 31 -- citing strong results in the division that includes mobile devices, with especially "brisk sales" of its GALAXY S II smartphone and newer Galaxy Note device.

Nintendo posts first annual loss of $460 million, predicts turnaround next year

Nintendo has announced its first annual operating loss following an initially lukewarm response to its new 3DS handheld and an aging Wii console -- set to be replaced later this year. Nintendo made an operating loss of 37.3 billion yen ($459.54 million) from 2011 to 2012, but intends to spin it around to a 35 billion yen operating profit in the forthcoming year. Net sales have dropped by 36.2 percent compared to last year, despite price cuts on its existing hardware like the 3DS and Wii. The Japanese games manufacturer has also seen increased competition from new rivals like Apple and Android manufacturers as mobile gaming continues to go from strength to strength. Nintendo also laid some of the blame at the weakened yen in international markets, but expects the incoming Wii U, cheaper 3DS production and incoming titles like New Super Mario Bros. 2, Brain Training and Animal Crossing will help turn its fortunes around. Nintendo intends the 3DS will start to sell "below cost" by the middle of the next financial year, following strong sales after substantial price cut last year. The company sold 36 million 3DS game titles, compared to 80.2 million on the original DS. The original DS still managed to sell 5.1 million units in the last year. The Wii managed to sell 9.84 million units in the last year, with 102.37 million titles sold.

Zynga CEO Mark Pincus: OMGPOP Acquisition Was A ?Rare Instance?

mark-pincusStepping back from remarks a few weeks ago that suggested that Zynga was about to go on a shopping spree, Zynga chief executive Mark Pincus said the $180 million acquisition of Draw Something-maker OMGPOP was a "rare instance." Although OMGPOP was certainly a step up from anything Zynga has ever done before, Pincus said it didn't represent a change in strategy from last year. He said Zynga will continue to be "prudent and bottom line-oriented" in its decisions today during the first-quarter earnings call.?That's a?change in tone from an interview with Bloomberg a few weeks ago when he said that he expected to do "a few? OMGPOP-sized deals in the next three to five years. His remarks helped send shares tumbling 13.9 percent from the day the story appeared.

Samsung AllShare Cast Hub hits the FCC, maintains an air of mystery

Image

Details remain decidedly light on this one, but it looks like Samsung could be about to expand its AllShare media streaming / sharing service with a new piece of hardware. A device dubbed the AllShare Cast Hub has now turned up in some FCC filings, apparently packing some HDMI connectivity and dual-band WiFi capabilities. Unfortunately, that's about all that the filings reveal, but it's not too much of a stretch to infer that the device is a media hub of some sort, presumably with the ability to stream media from your computer or smartphone to TVs that don't already support AllShare out of the box. We're guessing Samsung will fill in the rest of the details sooner or later, but those into test reports can dive into the links below right now.
