Mursi cuts Egypt's Syria ties, backs no-fly zone

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi said he had cut all diplomatic ties with Damascus on Saturday and backed a no-fly zone over Syria, pitching the most populous Arab state more firmly against President Bashar al-Assad.

Addressing a rally called by Sunni Muslim clerics in Cairo, the Sunni Islamist head of state also warned Assad's ally, the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shi'ite militia Hezbollah, to pull back from fighting in Syria.

"Hezbollah must leave Syria. These are serious words," said Mursi, whose country hosted a conference of Sunni clerics this week who issued a call for holy war against Damascus.

"There is no space or place for Hezbollah in Syria," Mursi said.

The rally underscored the region's deepening sectarian rift. A cleric who spoke before Mursi described Shi'ites as heretics, infidels, oppressors and polytheists.

It was also a show of support for Mursi as his opponents mobilise for protests to demand early presidential elections.

Mursi waved Syrian and Egyptian flags as he entered the auditorium packed with 20,000 supporters. The crowd chanted: "From the free revolutionaries of Egypt: We will stamp on you, Bashar!"

Mursi, a Muslim Brotherhood politician, steered clear of direct references to Shi'ites and Iran but in a partial allusion to Tehran, he accused states in the region and beyond of feeding "a campaign of extermination and planned ethnic cleansing" in Syria.

"We decided today to entirely break off relations with Syria and with the current Syrian regime," he said. He also urged world powers not to hesitate to enforce a no-fly zone over Syria.

Western diplomats said on Friday that Washington was considering a limited no-fly zone over parts of Syria, but the White House said later that the United States had no national interest in pursuing that option.

Russia, an ally of Assad and fierce opponent of outside military intervention in Syria, said any attempt to impose a no-fly zone using F-16 fighter jets and Patriots based in Jordan would be illegal.

Mursi said he was organising an urgent summit of Arab and other Islamic states to discuss the situation in Syria, where the United States has in recent days decided to take steps to arm the rebels.

Egypt's U.S.-funded and -trained army is among the most powerful in the Middle East. There has been no suggestion, however, that Egypt, a country steeped in poverty, should get involved in the fighting in Syria.

WARNS AGAINST VIOLENCE

Mursi said: "The Egyptian people supports the struggle of the Syrian people, materially and morally, and Egypt, its nation, leadership ... and army, will not abandon the Syrian people until it achieves its rights and dignity."

The Brotherhood has joined calls this week from Sunni Muslim religious organisations for jihad against Assad and his Shi'ite allies.

Egypt has not taken an active role in arming the Syrian rebels, but an aide to Mursi said this week that Cairo would not stand in the way of Egyptians who wanted to fight in Syria.

It marked Mursi's second combative foreign policy speech in less than a week. On Monday, he said Egypt would keep "all options open" for dealing with a dispute with Ethiopia over a giant dam it is building on the Nile, though he said Cairo did not want war and stressed it would work diplomatically.

Mursi's liberal and leftist opponents are mobilising for mass protests on June 30, the anniversary of Mursi coming to office, fuelling fears of possible further violence.

Mursi told his Islamist supporters at the rally that they must not be dragged into confrontations and that he would not tolerate any violence.

The stock market?s wild week: The US stock market has been on a roller coaster for the past week, with the Dow dropping over 100 points both Tuesday and Wednesday, then soaring on Thursday, and losing 105 points on Friday. The market gauge has swung more than 100 points in seven sessions over the past two weeks. The swings were felt abroad as well: Japan?s Nikkei Index plunged 6 percent Thursday.

The market volatility can be largely credited to uncertainty over central bank policies, and whether the Fed will allow short-term interest rates to climb in the coming months. In particular, bond prices have been falling in recent weeks over concerns that the Federal Reserve will soon scale back its stimulus efforts.?

Manufacturing goes flat: Total industrial production went unchanged in May, and manufacturing ticked up .01 percent. ?The weak numbers could be a signal that the US manufacturing sector is poised for a contraction, barring strong growth in June. ?Strong headwinds have made it difficult for the recovery to gain momentum,? IHS economist Erik Johnson wrote in an e-mailed analysis. ?The sequester will hurt growth through the end of the year, while slowing growth in emerging markets and a lengthy Eurozone recession have muted foreign demand. This is hurting manufacturing and prompting businesses to remain ultra-cautious about hiring and capital spending.?

Mortgage rates on the rise: ?The average interest rate for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage jumped to 3.98 percent this week, nearing the 4 percent mark for the first time in nearly a year and a half. The last time rates were over 4 percent was March 2012. ?Federal Reserve bond purchases have kept rates low during that period, and speculation that the Fed will end those purchases is pushing rates higher. Still, by historical standards, rates remain quite low.?

Why? More often than not events bore out his analysis. So when he has something to say about the region, I pay attention.

Today, he worries about the Obama administration's decision to provide light arms to some elements of Syria's rebels, writing that it could lead to "more prolonged bloodletting and and destruction."

The Obama Administration finally has decided to provide lethal military support to the Syrian rebels. Yet, if Washington?s main focus is providing arms, a detailed review of just that one option suggests it probably would not be enough to prevent some additional regime successes. Moreover, giving arms only to so-called ?vetted? (or moderate) rebel groups could aggravate tensions between disparate opposition camps, perhaps leading to rebel infighting. Some believe a US goal in supplying arms now (aside from bolstering the rebels) would be to re-balance the situation as a prelude to negotiations. Yet, getting the many combatants-?especially the rebels?to stand down is unlikely, so the outcome of limited arms shipments could be familiar: more prolonged bloodletting and destruction.

He argues that the US determination to limit arms to fighters that say they're opposed to the ultimate agenda of jihadis like Jabhat al-Nusra risks "being too selective militarily to have much overall impact" and points out that "rebel military vanguard has been radical Islamist in character - even al-Qaeda affiliated - for some time now." If Obama is hoping to put enough pressure on Assad to engage in meaningful peace talks, White expects the president will be disappointed.

It is no wonder it took the Obama Administration since late last summer to formulate a policy on lethal American support for Syria?s rebels, with limited regime chemical weapons use only partly driving yesterday?s decision. But even by mid-2012, supplying enough weapons to make a difference without providing them to extremists already had become an iffy proposition militarily. And with the opposition disunited, with some component groups bitterly opposing talks and rebels now regaining hope for victory over the regime with US help, useful diplomatic engagement also seems less promising than when Secretary John Kerry went to Moscow early last month.

Key mechanism boosts the signaling function of neurons in brain

June 14, 2013 ? Locating a car that's blowing its horn in heavy traffic, channel-hopping between football and a thriller on TV without losing the plot, and not forgetting the start of a sentence by the time we have read to the end -- we consider all of these to be normal everyday functions. They enable us to react to fast-changing circumstances and to carry out even complex activities correctly. For this to work, the neuron circuits in our brain have to be very flexible. Scientists working under the leadership of neurobiologists Nils Brose and Erwin Neher at the Max Planck Institutes of Experimental Medicine and Biophysical Chemistry in G?ttingen have now discovered an important molecular mechanism that turns neurons into true masters of adaptation.

Neurons communicate with each other by means of specialised cell-to-cell contacts called synapses. First, an emitting neuron is excited and discharges chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters. These signal molecules then reach the receiving cell and influence its activation state. The transmitter discharge process is highly complex and strongly regulated. Its protagonists are synaptic vesicles, small blisters surrounded by a membrane, which are loaded with neurotransmitters and release them by fusing with the cell membrane. In order to be able to respond to stimulation at any time by releasing transmitters, a neuron must have a certain amount of vesicles ready to go at each of its synapses. Brose has been studying the molecular foundations of this stockpiling for years.

The problem is not merely academic. "The number of immediately releasable vesicles at a synapse determines its reliability," explains Brose. "If there are too few and they are replenished too slowly, the corresponding synapse becomes tired very quickly in conditions of repeated activation. The opposite applies when a synapse can quickly top up its immediately available vesicles under pressure. In fact, such a synapse may even improve with constant activation."

This synaptic adaptability can be observed in practically all neurons. It is known as short-term plasticity and is indispensable for a large number of extremely important brain processes. Without it, we would not be able to localise sounds, mental maths would be impossible, and the speed and flexibility with which we can alter our behaviour and turn our attention to new goals would be lost.

Some years ago, Brose and his team discovered a protein with the cryptic name of Munc13. Not only is this protein indispensable for the replenishment of vesicles for immediate release at synapses; neuron activity regulates it in such a way that the fresh supply of vesicles can be adjusted in line with demand. This regulation occurs by means of a complex consisting of the signal protein calmodulin and calcium ions that build up in the synapses during intense neuron activity.

"Our earlier work on individual neurons in culture dishes showed that the calcium-calmodulin complex activates Munc13 and consequently ensures that immediately releasable vesicles are replenished faster," says Noa Lipstein, an Israeli guest scientist in Brose's lab. "But many colleagues were not convinced that this process also played a role in neurons in the intact brain."

So Lipstein and her Japanese colleague Takeshi Sakaba created a mutant mouse with genetically altered Munc13 proteins that could not be activated by calcium-calmodulin complexes. The two neurophysiologists first studied the effects of this genetic manipulation on synapses involved in the localisation of sound, which are typically activated several hundred times every second. "Our study shows that the sustained efficiency of synapses in intact neuron networks is critically dependent on the activation of Munc13 by calcium-calmodulin complexes," explains Lipstein.

The G?ttingen-based scientists are convinced of the significance of their study. After all, leading neuroscientists of the past described the calcium sensor responsible for synaptic short-term plasticity and its target protein as the Holy Grail. "I am confident that we have discovered a key molecular mechanism of short-term plasticity that plays a role in all synapses in the brain, and not only in cultivated neurons, as many colleagues believed," affirms Lipstein. And if she is, in fact, proved right about the interpretation of her findings, Munc13 could even be an ideal pharmacological target for drugs that influence brain function.

President Vladimir Putin has given his second exclusive interview in less than a year to the state funded English-language satellite network Russia Today, which prefers to be called RT, in a clear sign that the Kremlin views the broadcaster as a key medium for getting its opinions across to the world.?

In his opening remarks, Mr. Putin praised RT, which he said had been created to "end the monopoly of Anglo-Saxon media" in the world. There appears little doubt that Putin believes the network really does reach over 630-million people in over 100 countries ??as it claims to do?? and that such exclusive chats with the Russian president will help further boost its reach.?

Over an almost two hour chat, with most of RT's top staff seated around a long table, he went on to paint the Kremlin's alternative view of global affairs, in which a beleaguered Russia wages a lonely battle for principle and common sense against a cynical and hypocritical West.

Among other things, he chided the US over the current National Security Agency scandal, apparently under the impression that the key controversy is about the letter of the law rather than the extent and scope of state secrecy. "If this [surveillance] is made within the framework of the law, by which the special services? rules of conduct are guided, this is normal. If this is made illegally, it's bad," he said.

He reiterated a suggestion made by his press secretary that Russia might be open to granting asylum?to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Putin spent a good deal of time on the US, which he reminded RT viewers was founded on the "ethnic cleansing" of its native population, and used the atomic bomb on Japanese civilians at the end of WWII ??something he averred Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin would never do. "[Stalin] was a dictator and a tyrant, but I very much doubt that in the spring of 1945, if he had been in possession of an atomic bomb, he would have used it against Germany," Putin said.

He was asked one single question about domestic Russian politics, by RT's American talk show host Peter Lavelle. "Opinion polls show that the opposition in Russia is very small. What kind of opposition would you like to see?" was Mr. Lavelle's query.

Putin replied that opposition is fine, as long as it acts within the law. When protesters break the law, they should be answerable under the legal system. "This is what's happening both in the United States and Russia. But when we do that [put protesters on trial] we are criticized, but when the United States does this, it is considered as a norm. These are the so-called double standards," he said.

Moreover, "[Russia?s] diplomatic service doesn?t cooperate actively with the Occupy Wall Street activists, yet your diplomatic service actively cooperates [with Russia?s opposition] and supports them," Putin added.

Putin might have been defining the current mission of RT, which was started ??along with quite a few other media and PR platforms???8 years ago and tasked with improving Russia's image in the world through journalism that showed the country through the eyes of its own people. According to Russian media, the Kremlin funds RT to the tune of about $300-million annually, and Putin last year personally forbade the government to slash its funding.

The network's focus has migrated, especially since Putin returned to power last year amid widespread disapproval around the world. Now RT runs wall-to-wall coverage of protest rallies everywhere except in Russia, invites commentary from critics of almost every government except Russia's, and produces talk shows that slam Wall Street, attack US imperialism, and find the decline of the West lurking in almost every daily headline.

RT now maintains a full time cable station in the US, RT-America, which broadcasts mostly US-generated content around the clock. Last year, RT signed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to do a series of in-depth interview programs?that explored the corruptions of power and the rise of authoritarianism (in the West). Last month it did a deal with retired TV legend Larry King, that apparently involves RT picking up Mr. King's existing online talk show and also produce an all-new political talk show specially for RT. King subsequently appeared to deny that?but RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan insists that King is contracted to do the show.

The network's programming, along with its relentless Kremlin-inspired focus, is all perfectly fair commentary, of course. Indeed, RT seems deliberately designed to survey the West in the same arbitrary and hectoring tone that the Kremlin feels Western ??particularly US ??journalists cover Russia.?

A recent satirical article?in the Global Post, which garnered massive attention, aimed to show how US journalists would cover the NSA revelations if it were a foreign country: "Inside the United States," is the headline. "GlobalPost goes inside the United States to uncover the regime?s dramatic descent into authoritarian rule and how the opposition plans to fight back."

With San Onofre closing, sources of region's energy are uncertain

The permanent closure of the San Onofre nuclear plant leaves significant unanswered questions about the future of the energy supply in Southern California, the head of the state's Public Utilities Commission acknowledged Tuesday.

"How much we pay for power, how much we need, what kind of summers we have for the next couple of years, these are all matters of some uncertainty," commission Chairman Michael Peevey said in a meeting with The Times.

Southern California Edison, the majority owner of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, decided last week to retire the troubled plant, citing mounting costs and uncertainty about when and if federal regulators would clear the way for the plant to restart.

The facility, which hugs the coast just south of San Clemente, was initially closed after a tube in a recently installed generator began leaking radioactive steam. A subsequent inspection revealed that hundreds of tubes were wearing out at an unusually fast rate.

Peevey said the decision to close the plant for good means state energy officials now must begin making definitive plans for a power grid without San Onofre.

"The indecision this has caused has had the effect of freezing things here," he said, referring to the 16-month debate over San Onofre's future.

In the short term, Edison will have to continue buying power from elsewhere to replace the nuclear plant's 2,200-megawatt output, Peevey said. The plant had been a significant contributor to the region's energy supply, particularly in southern Orange County and San Diego.

Ted Craver, chief executive of SCE's parent company, Edison International, said last week that the company has spent more than $500 million on replacement power since the plant was shut down in January 2012.

The Public Utilities Commission will eventually have to decide whether ratepayers or shareholders will pick up the tab for the replacement power, as well as for the plant's operating costs during the outage and the $768.5-million cost of the steam generator replacement. The cost question is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the commission.

Peevey said energy officials will need to place more emphasis on efficiency. The California Independent System Operator on Wednesday will appeal to consumers to enroll in the Flex Alert program, which encourages summertime energy conservation.

Southern California will also need upgrades to its transmission system and officials will need to decide whether to build new plants or rely on existing facilities along the coast that would need expensive refurbishing to meet new regulations on the use of ocean water for cooling, he said.

While repowering coastal plants would be contingent on their owners deciding that it makes economic sense, doing so would be a much easier process than building entirely new plants, Peevey said.

"Where could you possibly build another power plant in Southern California?" he said.

FORT MEADE, Md. ? The court-marshal of an Army private who sent troves of classified documents to WikiLeaks is turning to information gathered from Guantanamo Bay detainees.

Pfc. Bradley Manning's trial enters its sixth day Wednesday at Fort Meade, near Baltimore.

Prosecutors plan to present evidence about more than 700 Gitmo detainee assessment briefs the former intelligence analyst has acknowledged leaking in March 2010. WikiLeaks published the documents on its website a month later.

The Washington Post reported that they revealed details about the movements of al-Qaida leaders during 2001.

Manning has said he didn't consider the reports important from an intelligence or national security standpoint but hoped they would have historical value.

He has pleaded not guilty to a charge that he stole the documents from a U.S. Southern Command database.

Afghan Taliban attack near Kabul airport

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? At least seven heavily armed Taliban insurgents launched a pre-dawn attack near Afghanistan's main airport Monday, apparently targeting NATO's airport headquarters with rocket-propelled grenades, assault rifles and at least one large bomb. Two Afghan civilians were wounded and all the attackers were killed after an hours-long battle.

It was the third time in a month that insurgents have launched a major attack in the Afghan capital, seeking high-profile targets to rattle public confidence as Afghan security forces take over most responsibility for protecting the country ahead of most foreign troops' withdrawal next year.

The airport itself was not damaged and reopened shortly after the fighting was over, said Kabul airport chief Yaqub Rassuli.

"There was no damage to the runway. Some shrapnel fell nearby, but we have cleared it away," Rassuli said.

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said two Afghan civilians were wounded, but there were no deaths among either security forces or civilians.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the insurgents were targeting NATO headquarters next to the civilian airport. The international military coalition said it was assessing the situation and had no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The attack began with an loud blast just as Kabul's residents had finished morning prayers at around 4:30 a.m.

Police said that attackers wearing suicide vests occupied one or two buildings under construction on the west side of the airport and were firing at the military facility, which was quite a distance away. It was unclear whether they hit anything inside the NATO facility.

"It first started with a big explosion which we think was a suicide attack. After that a gunbattle started," said Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai during the fighting. He added that at least five insurgents then occupied two buildings, located in a single compound, and started firing rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons.

"Sometimes they are shooting from one building, sometimes from other. It is a residential area and the compound has been surrounded by Afghan security forces. The security forces surrounded the buildings and are being careful because it is a residential area," he added.

Deputy Kabul police chief Dawood Amin says there were seven attackers in total. Two blew themselves up with suicide vests at the start of the assault and five were shot and killed by police during the battle.

The Taliban have launched intense attacks across the country, testing Afghan security forces as foreign combat troops pull back more than a decade after the U.S.-led invasion to oust the Taliban regime for sheltering al-Qaida's leadership after the Islamic extremist group launched the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.

The last big attack in Kabul was May 24, when six suicide bombers attacked a guest house belonging to the United Nations-affiliated International Organization for Migration, killing three people ? including a police officer, a guard and a civilian. On May 16, a suicide bomber had rammed a car into a NATO convoy killing 15 people, including two American soldiers and four civilian contractors.

The U.S.-led NATO coalition's Joint Command headquarters at the airport runs the day-to-day operations of the nearly 12-year-old war against insurgents. The airport's military side is also used for NATO transport and other aircraft.

"It started just after dawn prayers and I counted about a dozen explosions, mostly RPG fire, coming from the airport," said Emayatullah, who lives next to the airport. Like many Afghans he uses only one name.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The two Hall of Fame jockeys were just about nose to nose as their horses hit the middle of the final turn of the Belmont Stakes.

Gary Stevens, aboard Preakness winner Oxbow, was going to relinquish the lead to the hard-charging Palace Malice, and he knew it. He glanced over to his right and looked at good friend Mike Smith and told him: "You go on with him big boy, you're moving better than me."

Was he ever.

Palace Malice seized the lead with a quarter-mile to go Saturday in the final leg of the Triple Crown and ran off to a 3?-length victory over Oxbow at Belmont Park, with Kentucky Derby winner Orb another 1? lengths back in third.

"Mike rode a superb race," Stevens said. "Midway around the turn, I said, 'Well maybe.' But I have ridden long enough to know that he (Oxbow) was going to walk home. To finish second, I am really surprised."

Palace Malice, who came into the race with only one win in seven starts, vindicated trainer Todd Pletcher's support of the 3-year-old colt despite a 12th place finish in the Derby.

"It's huge. It's huge," Pletcher said about his second Belmont win. "We always felt like he had a big one in him. We were just waiting for it to finally develop. I told (owner) Mr. (Cot) Campbell this horse is training unbelievable. I know he's got a big run, we just need to put it all together."

The Belmont concludes a Triple Crown season in which hopes were high that Orb could break the 35-year drought without a sweep of the classics. In fact, it's the fourth time in five years each race was won by a different horse.

Palace Malice, who skipped the Preakness, covered the 1? miles in a slow 2:30.70 on a fast track following a 24-hour downpour. A crowd of 47,562 turned out on a warm, sunny afternoon as Tropical Storm Andrea moved out of the area.

For the second time during this Triple Crown run, Pletcher sent out five horses. He came up short in the Derby five weeks ago, skipped the Preakness and regrouped, and came through at his home track for an owner who has supported him from the start.

"It's the mother of all great moments, I'll tell you that," the 85-year old Campbell said. "I'm proud for Dogwood and proud for my partners, and I'm proud of Todd, one of the greatest horse trainers of all time."

Sent off at odds of 13-1, Palace Malice returned $29.60, $11.20 and $6.70. Oxbow, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, returned $9.90 and $6.10, and Orb, the 2-1 favorite trained by Shug McGaughey, paid $3.30.

"He made a good run around the turn, but we had given up so much," McGaughey said about the colt who was still ninth with a half-mile to go and just could not make up the difference. "I don't think he got tired. He put up a pretty good run to get where he was, and those horses just weren't coming back."

Incognito was fourth, followed by Revolutionary, the filly Unlimited Budget, Overanalyze, Vyjack, Golden Soul, Will Take Charge, Giant Finish, Midnight Taboo, Freedom Child and Frac Daddy.

Rosie Napravnik, who was aboard Unlimited Budget, became the first female to ride in all three Triple Crown races in the same year. She was trying to become the second female jockey to win a Triple Crown race.

Pletcher's other Belmont starters were Revolutionary, Unlimited Budget, Overanalyze and Midnight Taboo.

All week, Pletcher expressed optimism that Palace Malice was ready to unleash a big effort. On June 2, the son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin put in a blazing 4 furlong workout in 47.40 seconds. Pletcher called it one of the most impressive works he'd ever seen.

And it carried over to the race and gave the nation's leading trainer his second Belmont win (he won the 2007 Belmont with the filly Rags to Riches) to go with his 2010 Derby win with Super Saver. Smith won his second Belmont, having won aboard Drosselmeyer in 2010.

"The game plan was mapped out, and it really went according to plan," Smith said. "We were laying third on the outside of Oxbow, like we wanted. At the three-eighths, Gary said, 'Go on, little brother.' ... And we went on it with it, man."

The 14-horse field ? the largest since 1996 ? got off to an even start.

Frac Daddy and Freedom Child set out for the lead from their inside posts, with Oxbow not far behind. As the field came out of the turn, Oxbow had the lead heading into the long backstretch run. But unlike the Preakness, he had company up front and the pace was a bit quicker. By the time Oxbow reached the far turn, Palace Malice loomed and Orb was beginning to make a run from way back in the pack.

And that's when Palace Malice took charge. The only question was whether anyone was going to catch him. Unlike the Derby, Orb could not complete a come from behind victory. He couldn't even reel in the tiring Oxbow.

"It's been fun. I've got no problems with anything, everthing's fine with me," McGaughey said. "I just wish we wold have showed a little better performances in the Preakness and the Belmont."

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - An asteroid the size of a small truck zoomed past Earth four times closer than the moon on Saturday, the latest in a parade of visiting celestial objects that has raised awareness of potentially hazardous impacts on the planet.?

NASA said Asteroid 2013 LR6 was discovered about a day before its closest approach to Earth, which occurred at 12:42 a.m. EDT (0442 GMT on Saturday) about 65,000 miles over the Southern Ocean, south of Tasmania, Australia.?

The 30-foot-wide (10-meter-wide) asteroid posed no threat.?

A week ago, the comparatively huge 1.7-mile-wide (2.7-km-wide) asteroid QE2, complete with its own moon in tow, passed 3.6 million miles (5.8 million km) from Earth.?

While on February 15, a small asteroid exploded in the atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia, leaving more than 1,500 people injured by flying glass and debris. That same day, an unrelated asteroid passed just 17,200 miles from Earth, closer than the networks of communication satellites that ring the planet.?

"There is theoretically a collision possible between asteroids and planet Earth," astronomer Gianluca Masi, with the Virtual Telescope project, said during a Google+ webcast that showed live images of the approaching asteroid.?

NASA says it has found about 95 percent of the large asteroids, those with diameters 0.65 miles or larger, with orbits that take them relatively close to Earth.?

An object of that size hit the planet about 65 million years ago in what is now Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, triggering a global climate change that is believed to be responsible for the demise of the dinosaurs and many other forms of life on Earth.?

The U.S. space agency and other research organizations, as well as private companies, are working on tracking smaller objects that fly near Earth.?

BOONE, Iowa (AP) ? Authorities planned to conduct an autopsy Saturday on a body found in a river that is believed to be that of a 15-year-old girl who was abducted more than two weeks ago.

Investigators are confident that the body a fisherman found Friday night in the Des Moines River near Boone is that of Kathlynn Shepard, who was abducted in Dayton, about 20 miles north of Boone, on May 20 along with a 12-year-old girl who later escaped and called 911.

The clothes on the body matched what Kathlynn was wearing the day she was taken, and authorities also found zip ties that matched those used to restrain the younger girl who escaped.

Gerard Meyers, assistant director of field operators of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said the body was concealed by debris when the fisherman found it. It was recovered by Boone County sheriff's deputies.

"We're fairly confident the unfortunate circumstance this evening was the recovery of Kathlynn," Meyers said at a news conference just after midnight in Boone.

Authorities believe Michael Klunder, a registered sex offender who has since killed himself, approached the girls after they got off their school bus and asked whether they wanted to earn money mowing lawns. They say Klunder offered to drive them to ask their parents for permission, but he instead took them several miles away to the hog confinement facility where he worked.

Klunder bound the girls' hands with zip ties in an office there, but when he took Kathlynn to another part of the property, the younger girl managed to slip her ties and flee through the woods, authorities allege. She eventually found some farmers and called 911.

Authorities found Klunder dead hours later at another rural property. They say the 42-year-old hanged himself.

Hundreds of officers and volunteers had searched for Kathlynn, but hopes of finding her alive were dampened when testing confirmed that blood found on Klunder's truck and at the hog building was Kathlynn's.

"We were robbed of some innocence in this whole thing," said Webster County Sheriff James Stubbs. "We'll never quite be the same. Hopefully time will heal some of those wounds, but the awareness is a lot higher than it was before."

Klunder was released from prison in 2011 after serving 20 years for convictions in two separate kidnappings in Iowa that occurred on back-to-back days in December 1991.

In the first, police said he lured a woman on a highway near Mason City out of her vehicle by claiming she was missing a taillight, and then forced her into his car and tried to assault her. In the second, he snatched two 3-year-old toddlers from a Charles City apartment complex, put them in a trunk and left them 50 miles away at a secluded garbage bin, where they were found alive hours later.

Police are also looking into whether Klunder may have been responsible for the kidnapping and slaying of two young cousins who vanished while riding bikes in Evansdale, about 90 miles from Dayton. The bodies of the girls, who were 10 and 8 years old when they vanished, were found in December in a wooded area in Bremer County, where Klunder once lived in a home for emotionally troubled youth.

The cousins were from Black Hawk County, where sheriff's office investigators are still tracking the actions and whereabouts of Klunder around the time that Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins went missing.

Authorities note that Klunder isn't their sole focus and they continue to follow up on other leads.

These Joyful Mysteries: Summer Wish Lists

Last night at dinner we each made our summer wish list.? The rules were that they had to put at least 10 items on their lists and half of them had to take place at home.? I was really impressed with what they came up with.? It warmed my heart that so many had to do with being all together.

We took turns reading our lists out loud.? I made a list as well. (Dad wasn't here so his is missing.)?

Thomas (age 9):
1.Community Center to play tennis or go to the pool.
2.Talent Show (put on their own).
3.Family picnic.
4.Playground.
5.Cook of the Day.
6.Family trips (car trips).
7. Five minutes of playtime with each family member one on one.
8.Kickball ( Mom, Billy, and Tommy vs. Dad, Mary, Ann, and Matt).
9.Board games.
10.Anything.

?Matthew (age 4):
1.play XBox.
2.Read out loud with the family.
3.Hug our family; group hugs.
4.Amusement park.
5.Take Vader for a walk.
6.Go into sprinkler.
7.Like Mom really much.
8.Play Crazy 8's.
9.Make new best friends.
10.Go to the pool.

Ann (age 8):
1.Camping in backyard.
2.Read with the family.
3.More family cuddling.
4.Go on a family picnic
5.Go to the park.
6.Go on a bike ride.
7.Play Monopoly.
8.Draw a family portrait.
9.Go to a museum.
10. Go to Gran and Gramps' house.
11. Dance together.

Billy (age 13):
1. Go to Miami (he's been a Miami Heat fan for years).
2.Get dropped off at community center.
3.Play kickball.
4.Have a catch with Dad.
5.Home Run Derby with neighbor friends and Dad and Tommy.
6.Cook dinners.
7.Wall ball.
8.Disney World.
9.Universal.
10. Phillies Game.

Mom(age 42):
1.Library visits.
2.pool.
3.organize and clean garage.
4.have a yard sale.
5.visit Dad in D.C.
6.paint the dining room.
7. 9a.m. exercise....all 6 of us....walk, bike, etc. every M, T, Th.
8.Board games.
9. Free movies at the theater.
10. Franklin Institute. (and have lunch with the 2 uncles who work in Philly).

***Mom's wish lists for kids***
1. One book + book report/review a week.
2.Practice piano every day.? (Mary adds in violin too)
3.Call a grandparent or uncle/aunt once a week. (I hope the family members don't mind)
4.Good deed a week (notes to someone, bake for someone, etc.)
5.Playdates with friends
6.Start answering the phone for speaking experience.
7.Learn how to do laundry.
8.Cook a meal once a week.
9. Write in journal every day.
10. School workbooks.
?11. Billy-start a blog.? Mary start a family newspaper. (their ideas)

Mary(age 12):
1.Talent Show
2. Craft Day

4.Family newspaper

6.Make an obstacle course.

That should keep us busy for a while.
