In Asia?s trend-setting cities, iPhone fatigue sets in iPhone ??????????????

Apple Inc?s iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia?s well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, eating into Apple?s market share.

In Singapore, Apple?s products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple?s share of mobile devices in Singapore ? iPad and iPhone ? declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple?s iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

AT&T partners with The Cloud to offer customers access to 16,000 WiFi hotspots in the UK

AT&T partners with The Cloud to offer customers access to 16,000 WiFi hotspots in the UK

AT&T has just entered into an agreement with The Cloud, owned by BSkyB, for its customers to be able to make use of 16,000 WiFi hotspots throughout the UK. This means AT&T customers who frequently travel to the UK will be able to connect to The Cloud's hotspots and use up to 1GB of data without incurring any roaming charges or data overages. According to The Next Web AT&T customers will be able to subscribe to a data add-on, which doesn't necessarily make it free, but will prevent large data overages.

If you already have a data plan in place, which most users do considering the use of an iPhone or other smartphone requires it, you won't incur any charges you already aren't use to seeing on your monthly bill.

The Cloud is one of the UK's largest WiFi hotspot providers and continues to add more coverage across the UK. Make sure you download the AT&T WiFi International app from either the App Store or Google Play before traveling. This will allow you to take advantage of your 1GB of free data through The Cloud once you're abroad.

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt calls out China in book

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt's opinion that China is the world's No. 1 hacker is shared by many in Silicon Valley. What has the business world buzzing is that he publicly called out that country's Communist leaders in an upcoming book.

In "The New Digital Age," to be published in April, Schmidt and co-author Jared Cohen, a former State Department official who now heads the think tank Google Ideas, say China is the "most sophisticated and prolific" cyberthief threatening foreign companies. They also call China the "world's most active and enthusiastic filterer of information." And they say cyberattacks by China's state-associated firms are economically damaging to America.

China, which tightly controls Internet

speech in the name of promoting a "harmonious" society, denies engaging in cyber-espionage. But Western companies and the U.S. government say otherwise.

Schmidt is the highest profile Silicon Valley tech executive to publicly take China to task over censorship and cyberattacks. It's a move that could further damage his company's prospects in the world's largest Internet market, some experts say. But it could also signal the beginning of a push-back by U.S. executives against what they see as China's cyberthefts and censorship.

"You hear this kind of thing in private" among executives, said Rebecca MacKinnon, senior fellow at the New America Foundation and an expert on global Internet policy. "But it's rare to hear this on the

record, in writing."

Schmidt was Google's chief executive in 2010 when the Mountain View Internet giant challenged Communist leaders by halting the practice of self-censoring searches in China. Instead, Google rerouted traffic through its site in Hong Kong, where mainland China's censorship rules do not apply.

As a result, Google's share of China's Internet search market has plunged from about 35.9 percent at its peak at the end of 2009 to 15.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, while local rival Baidu claimed 78.6 percent, according to Beijing-based research firm Analysys International. Google's free Gmail service is continuously disrupted and its Web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and data storage services have been blocked in China. Likewise, Google's YouTube video site is blocked. In September, Google shut down its China music download service and three months later its China-based shopping search business.

In China, Schmidt's book is apt to be read as a broadside from Google rather than just the judgment of the authors, said Anna Han, a Santa Clara University business law professor who advises U.S. companies operating in China.

Because Google has effectively pulled out of China, Schmidt is more free to criticize its government than are executives of other U.S. companies with operations there, who would fear retaliation, said Eva Galperin of the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation.

BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis, though, said Google still has an important stake in China.

"Things could get worse," he said. The "Android (operating system) could be banned. Some of their other services could be shut down."

In their book, Schmidt and Cohen recount Google's decision to stop censoring searches in China after a sophisticated cyberattack on the company's intellectual property in late 2009, an assault it believes was directed by the Chinese government or its agents.

Google is not the only prominent U.S. company to complain of attack by hackers in China. The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News recently reported they were victims of Chinese cyberattacks.

Schmidt and Cohen express concern not only about the Chinese government but also about Chinese technology giants, such as Huawei, which last fall was deemed a security risk by the U.S. House Intelligence Committee because its telecommunications equipment could be used for spying.

Schmidt and Cohen say that because of close ties between large Chinese companies and China's government, the growing global might of the technology giants enhances the influence of their government. Where Huawei gains market share, they write, the "influence and reach" of China's government grows.

Schmidt's concerns are echoed by many in the tech industry, MacKinnon said.

In December, for example, TechAmerica, TechNet, the Internet Association and other tech groups joined the Obama administration in opposing a treaty supported by China and other developing countries that could have given governments more control of the Internet.

"We are starting to see companies kind of take more of a stand than they might have (in the past) and maybe Schmidt is out in front," MacKinnon said.

Ed Black, CEO of the Computer & Communications Industry Association, said Schmidt is well qualified to criticize China.

"He has been exposed so much to what China is doing and understands the significance of China that not to talk about it would be out of place," he said.

Black, too, has spoken out, testifying twice before Congress. As a result, his organization has been targeted by hackers he believes are based in China.

"We came under massive assault," Black said.

Tom Ford unveils clothing line in London catwalk debut

LONDON (Reuters) - American designer Tom Ford unveiled his womenswear line to the world on Monday in a lavish London Fashion Week debut that will help seal the city's credentials as a major international fashion hub.

Industry bloggers and buyers have flocked to London this season drawn by the big names on show, including Burberry, Erdem, Vivienne Westwood and Ford, who blended Inuit patterns, fur and pop-art designs in his cross-culture collection.

Once displayed behind closed doors for private clients and the editors of glossy fashion magazines, the collection's public showcasing coincides with the expansion of Ford's legion of stores in Europe and beyond, which will total 100 by the end of next year.

"We're in pretty much most major markets," Ford told Reuters after the show in the majestic rooms of historic Lancaster House, a short distance away from Buckingham Palace.

"We open our London store this fall ... and it's really the last of the major global capitals where we do not have a freestanding store," he said.

Even though it has produced some of fashion's biggest names, such as Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, London in the past has struggled to maintain its international profile on par with Paris, Milan and New York.

But with stars like singer Rihanna and fashion darling Ford heading this year's catwalk line-up along with well-established names like Westwood, London is rising to the challenge.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel sat on the front row to watch a procession of sequined bomber jackets, cowhide skirts and sheer evening dresses with fur trims parade along the L-shaped runway, illuminated by roving spotlights.

"England does produce some of the most creative fashion designers in the world and often they do leave because they go to France or they go to Italy to work," Ford said, adding he would love to entice some big British names back to the British capital, where he lives and works.

"I would love to lure back my friend Stella McCartney, I would love to lure back other people, it would be great if McQueen showed here ... you know a lot of people who don't show here but live here and work here," he said.

The direct value of the British fashion industry to the UK's $2.5 trillion economy is 21 billion pounds ($32.6 billion), according to estimates from the British Fashion Council (BFC).

With buyers from 39 different countries attending, the BFC estimates orders of more than 100 million pounds are placed each season at London Fashion Week.

WHIMSICAL

Burberry sent a whimsical collection of its trademark trench coats down the runway embellished with heart motifs, animal prints and metallic detailing for Autumn/Winter 2013.

"The collection was really about the iconic Burberry colors, so black, white, camel and red, mixed with a little bit of gold," Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey told Reuters after the show.

Held in London's Hyde Park, models sported fitted dresses, chic pencil skirts, knitted jumpers and shiny golden belts.

"(Burberry) is smart, it's casual, it's cool, it's young. It's classic. It just caters for such a broad market," said British model and actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. "This is my favorite show to come and watch and I think Burberry always impresses everyone."

Opulent tones of burgundy, midnight blue and scarlet red featured across Christopher Kane's collection, along with revealing velvet dresses and feathered flower shapes sewn onto sheer tops and skirts.

The Scottish designer infused colorful camouflage prints into his collection, as well as floral appliques, feathers and fur.

Models donned boxy jackets with contrasting buckles, loosely cut trousers that hung off the hips and heavily embellished sheer silk dresses.
