For my son, that wasn't an option as his father is an Atheist and didn't want him attending any sort of religious school (but let me take him to church every Sunday...I think because my ex liked the time alone on Sunday mornings, to be honest), so my mom babysat my son. Which was great for what it was...and provided her with some income. However, it was more "playdates" with Nanny than it was an educational experience. As a result, he wasn't quite up to par when he started Kindergarten, so for the first half of the year went to "Extended Day" kindergarten, which meant all day. It was a wonderful program, and by January he was where they needed him to be by June, so he switched to regular half-day Kindergarten at that point. If preschool would have been more affordable, though, he wouldn't have been slightly disadvantaged to start off. His teacher did tell me that there is a definite difference starting Kindergarten between the children who attend preschool and those who don't.
So, FauxNews can "claim" whatever it wants...I think it's a great idea and will greatly aid children of lower income families, in particular.
